The 1st digital SLR camera came out twenty years back and went for $26,000! The beast of a camera consisted of a 1.3 MP Kodak DCS-100 attached to a Nikon F3 film body and a big hard drive that you had to carry over your shoulder! Electronic camera technology has come a good way in short period. How can you distinguish between the best cameras and how does one select which one to purchase?

If you are serious about taking pictures, or want to get more serious about it then you will be quite happy with the present choices for DSLRs under $1,000. Even professionals searching for an inexpensive backup camera can consider these options because of their excellent features and quality.

Possibly the best three of the under $1,000 DSLR class are the Canon EOS T3i, The Nikon D5100 and the Sony DSLR-A580. Each major manufacturer is driven to keep creating a higher quality DSLR to serve the needs and desires of the purchaser and to keep abreast of the competition. For the manufacturer it comes down to making a return, but in the end the customer comes out as the clear winner as technology ceaselessly races onwards.

Possibly the one greatest advance in DSLR cameras is the image sensor. Just 5 years back a Canon EOS 1Ds Mark II would have cost $8,000 and if you compare it with the image-quality of the Canon EOS T3i which costs one tenth as much you’ll see the T3i image quality is just as good if not better than the 1Ds Mark II. Extraordinary when you think about it, but discoveries in sensor design have most certainly modified what digicams are capable of manufacturing. Even better, Canon camera parts can be found for decent prices not like just a few years ago when it was a very expensive undertaking.

The current best of the under $1,000 DSLR cameras can capture HDR photos in-camera, record HD video, boast huge LCD screens that revolve, live view and super fast image recording to the newest SDXC memory sticks instead of CF memory. The genuine difference between the cameras, and the most typical way that folk pick which one to buy boils down to lenses.

If you already use Canon, Sony or Nikon lenses, you’ll want to remain with that very same manufacturer or else you will have to buy all new lenses for your new camera. Considering that a good lens can cost half the price of a new camera, they are no tiny investment. If you’d like one or two different lenses for different shooting eventualities then you will have additional money invested in them than you will in the camera. Imagine having to buy your lenses all over again!

All three top digital camera manufacturers have great lenses to go with their cameras. The top choices for professionals are Nikon and Canon as Sony is fairly new to the DSLR market and does not have the history of making fantastic lenses like Nikon and Canon do. You wont mess up with any of the 3 brands, but when it comes to DSLRs Nikon is surely proffered by professionals over Canon partly thanks to their extraordinary lens craftsmanship.

For the consumer, choosing either the Canon T3i or Nikon D5100 are glorious selections, with the D5100 a little edging out the Canon to be the best option. While Sony is unquestionably showing better quality with their Alpha DSLRs and the A580 is an excellent choice, the D5100 is a little better in all classes and has a superb spread of lenses available to be used. It is also very easy to source Nikon camera parts on the internet should you ever have the misfortune of damaging your camera.

You are not going to go wrong with any of the 3, just remember you’ll probably be sticking with that type of camera for a long time in the future so take care you are satisfied with your choice before you commit yourself to the purchase.
.

The Canon DSLR Err 99 error message has been bedeviling EOS DSLR camera owners for quite a long time now. There’s this understanding that Canon is aware of what the issue is and is lying to consumers regarding the real meaning of the error. Here’s the real answer, and its not going to make you content, sorry.

Err 99 is a common error on Canon EOS digicams that implies there’s some type of bad thing happening but the camera isn’t sure precisely what! Error 99 is not a specific error code that can be used to point out an exact problem or a design issue with the camera!

For instance, these are error messages from page 171 of the Canon EOS 10D manual :
Err 01 – Clean the lens contacts
Err 02 – There’s a issue with the CF card…
Err 04 – The CF Card is full…
Err 05 – Something is obstructing the built-in flash….
Err 99 – An error aside from the above…

It’s just like the old Canon E:18 error message that simply means there’s a problem with the lens. Loads of people went off the deep end with this code and thought it meant it’s a lens design failing and Canon knew all about it. Canon subsequently stopped using the E:18 error code in favor of “Lens error, restart camera” and similar messages as an alternative.

If you have any DSLR camera you may at some particular point in time ; if you use the camera enough, a failure of the shutter box assembly. This is fundamentally the only moving part of the camera and so it will one day wear out and break.

Canon entry level Digital Rebel cameras have less robust shutter box assemblies compared to the professional counterparts, and can malfunction after ten to fifteen thousand actuations. If you take plenty of photographs this might only last you a couple years. A Canon EOS professional DSLR has a shutter box rated as high as two hundred to three hundred thousand actuations which would possibly last the average consumer their whole lifetime.

If a professional photographer gets an Error 99 message with one of their cameras, they know that the shutter box is at the end of its lifespan due to normal useage; they dont blame Canon. Why is it that when shoppers see this error message they blame Canon and want to be paid? Cant we accept that the moving part of the camera has a limited lifespan and will one day must be replaced? Do we blame a car manufacturer when things break on our autos? No, we just pay hundreds or perhaps thousands to have it fixed.

If you own a Canon EOS DSLR with the Error 99 problem there are plenty of things you can attempt first before paying for Canon Err 99 repair to have it fixed. You should try cleaning the lens and body contact points with a n eraser, and you can try putting in a different memory chip. If these things do not work you will need to start looking for Canon EOS Error 99 repair. It’s not a design flaw, its just ordinary wear and tear.

Have you learned about the Canon EF-S 17-85mm IS USM lens aperture diaphragm dying? This is a very useful lens that can be used so many situations its hard to be without it! What can be done when it starts to fail?

A new Canon EF-S 17-85mm lens should last approximately 4-5 years, so you’ll be able to take many thousands pictures with it, and will find it to be a great general-purpose zoom lens. Some people get a Canon EF 24-70mm lens to replace it, but keep the 17-85mm for a backup.

Latterly while on a photography road-trip we were using the 17-85mm lens on a Canon 350D camera. Focusing was fine, but any attempt to take a photograph would end in the 350D showing “Err ninety nine” on the LCD, and the camera needed to be turned off and back on to clear the blunder. “Err 99″ is a universal catch-all inaccuracy code on the 350D, and can mean virtually anything.

Trying the 17-85mm lens on a Canon 50D ended in a more explicit inaccuracy : “Err 01 – Communications between the camera and lens is faulty. Clean the lens contacts.” Not surprisingly, cleaning the lens contacts with a pencil eraser did not do anything to decide the inaccuracy.

Some further research on the internet indicated a potential issue with the diaphragm assembly ; the moving parts that set the aperture. Trial – error indicated the diaphragm assembly was failing when the zoom was between 17mm and 24mm and the aperture was smaller than f / four. Outside of these parameters, the lens still worked normally.

The “Depth-of-field Preview” button on Canon DSLR cameras stops the lens down to the currently selected aperture. It proved to be a convenient way to check the lens, and it might be confirmed the lens diaphragm assembly was working correctly at the longer zoom range, but failing to operate at all between 17mm and 24mm.

When hitting the DOF Preview button, you should be able to hear the diaphragm assembly working if the aperture is stopped down from the lens ‘ maximum, as well as seeing the lens aperture blades closing when looking into the front of the lens.

Allegedly this is a fairly common issue with the 17-85mm lens, typically caused by an open circuit in the ribbon flex cable to the diaphragm assembly in the lens, caused by repeated zoom operation of the lens.

Replacement cables are available to repair the Canon EF-S 17-85mm diaphragm flex cable online so you can fix the lens yourself if you have the time and patience. The 17-85mm lens is out of warranty, and primarily based on a fast search online, is perhaps worth about $300 if it was fully functional. It is a great lens, and was still gets a lot of use, so it is worth it to get it working again.

You could be worried with sending your baby to a shop, that it’s going to be a costly exercise and may not be rewarding given the value of the lens. You may want to considering purchasing a Canon EF-S 17-85mm lens flex cable online, and attempting the replacement yourself as an alternative. If you’re pretty handy with tools and a soldering iron, correcting a lens might be your cup of tea. If the diagnosis of a defective diaphragm ribbon cable is incorrect, then replacing the cable won’t accomplish much, aside from gaining some experience in dis-assembly and assembly of a lens.

Should it be sent to a camera center, and hope it isn’t going to be too costly to do, or should the purchaser try and find the Canon EF-S 17-85mm aperture repair part themselves? Its a tough question to clear up as it is not a simple fix but if you can do it you may save hundreds of greenbacks in the process.

Just as the Canon 60D DSLR was aimed exactly at the Nikon D90 and D7000, the new Canon Digital Rebel T3i has the D5000 and D5100 in its sights. We have been testing for quite a lot of time with the Rebel T3i, aka 600D, which comes with a swiveling LCD screen and a touch heftier body, and both feels and looks a little more impressive than past Rebels. Coming with a new 18-55mm IS II kit lens, or the 18-135mm IS lens that is also available with the 60D, the new T3i looks and feels like its prosumer sibling, except for the grip spacing. It will be ideal for those with little to medium hands, but those with larger hands could be more comfortable with the 60D.

Of course the major differences between the T3i and 60D are few. It’s down to frame rate ( 3.7 vs. 5.3 fps ), maximum shutter speed ( 0.25 vs. One/8,000), AF refinement ( only 1 cross-type vs. All 9 cross-type ), rangefinder size ( 0.85x vs. 0.95x ), buffer depth, battery type, and grip size. There are a few more minor things different, but those are the gigantic items. Therefore, the T3i seems like a fairly good choice.

Compared to the Rebel T2i, the T3i comes with the rotating LCD, the new lens, more reduced-resolution JPEG options, and an Auto Picture Style mode. The Canon T3i (body with battery and mem card) also weighs a little more than the T2i, coming in at 20.6 ounces ( 583g ) matched against the T2i’s 18.5 ounces ( 525g ). As mentioned, it is slightly larger in all dimensions : 133.1 x 99.5 x 79.7, compared to 128.8 x 97.5 x 75.3. Some of those differences will make a difference, and I believe people who like rotating LCD’s will select the T3i, while those that don’t like them can select happily a T2i without feeling like they are missing a great deal.

The way things are now, the Canon T3i is the flagship Rebel, with the T3 and T2i beneath it in features. Its still image quality is among the finest in its price range, and its video modes are quite complete, offering excellent quality, provided you can handle shooting video more fastidiously than you would with a digital camera or video recorder.

Taken in total, the Canon T3i is an excellent digital SLR, with just about every feature we have been craving for in a sub-$1,000 camera. The articulating screen stands out in particular as a extremely handy feature, and with the Nikon D5100 having the same side-swiveling design, it was critical that a Rebel have one too. The LCD is beautiful and very high resolution, excellent in sunlight, and if an accident happens to it and it’s cracked you can easily find Canon digital camera repair to put it right again. The only problem we had with it was that this was harder to notice out-of-focus areas while shooting video.

Either available lens choice is a very good one, with the 18-55mm keeping the overall camera size light and sharp, and the 18-135mm lens taking care of most photographic needs with coolness. Optically, both are better matches to the 18-megapixel sensor than past offerings, and both include optical image stabilization.

Images printed from ISO 100 to 3,200 are quite nice up to 20×30 inches, which is very impressive ; and even ISO 12,800 images make the best 8×10-inch print.

The sole major issue Canon has on its hands is that there are three excellent 18-megapixel DSLR’s that are priced within just a few hundred bucks of one another. The T2i was excellent, then the 60D came with its rotating LCD and a decided lean towards the Rebel line, and then the T3i entered the scene. The better news is that you can’t fail with any of them, especially in terms of overall image quality. They are all glorious. It’s then just a matter of which features you’d like your wonderful new DSLR camera to have.

The idea of product design defects is an interesting one. Should makers of the product be held responsible for any and all problems for a device after it has been sold to consumers and a wide-reaching problem has been diagnosed? If the defect is trivial, and has little influence on the operation of the product should they continue to be made to fix it? Who decides if a fault is indeed ‘minor ‘ and how should the whole process best be handled?

There are 1 or 2 examples today of mass produced digital cameras that have well-known defects, but the manufacturers’ representatives when asked about the issue will state they have not heard about it before. All the major camera makers are guilty of this, so it seems to be the policy of each company to deny understanding of a difficulty unless made to do so legally.

When an enormous issue appears with a product, and the manufacturer knows the issue, they should fix it. That does make sense. For instance, it is announced that the Ford Motor Company decided it’d be cheaper in the long run to NOT recall the “Pinto” model automobiles that had a hefty rate of catching on fire and exploding when in certain accidents due to poor design. Instead of fixing the issue before there was accidental, they made a decision it would be cheaper to settle lawsuits against them for wounds and deaths due to the design instead. Obviously in this situation, the manufacturer should have fixed the auto before there had been any injury or deaths in the 1st place.

When it comes to smaller electronics, when is it worth it to take the company to court and try and require them to mend the product? As an example, the Canon SD790 hand strap screws almost always vibrate themselves loose and drop out of the camera. This causes the side trim of the camera body including the handstrap itself to fall off, leaving a giant gaping hole in the side of the camera for mud and waste to enter simply.

The screws should be secured with something like “Locktite”, and can be bought online for roughly $7 including shipping for a pair. In this example if the manufacturer pay each consumer of this camera $7 or send them a couple of screws and some “Locktite” to secure them? We both know that the sole way that would occur is if they were legally forced to do so. The difficulty is, a legal case will take forever to settle, and the only people who actually benefit from it are the counsels, and no one else.

The lawyers in a case like this, representing many thousands of customers, could stand to earn a hundred thousand dollars or more for his or her time, while the shopper sees just $7 each. Is this fair? Is this justice? The case could take forever to settle, and meanwhile all you need is a screw repair kit for your Canon SD790!

A new problem that is beginning to show up lately is the fact that the Canon Powershot G9 camera also has screws that loosen and fall out of the camera body! These days there are many unhappy Canon customers looking for Canon G9 replacement screws as well! Is there no end in site?

A more honorable thing for the maker to do would be to own up to the issue and offer a solution for either a particularly minimum cost to the consumer or no charge at all . This may go a ways to increase buyer confidence in the maker as well as keeping that client dependable to the brand thus making the money back thru future purchase. Unfortunately it seems as though sizeable firms could be too concerned about today to consider the future.

We all know that digicams here for good, it’s just about how it’s most likely going to be done from this point on. Camera manufacturers will keep on improving their skills and pack more power into the electronic cameras. If you want to enhance your picture taking talents so you keep getting the best photographs possible, here is some helpful advice that should help you out.

1- Find the right digicam to suit your needs. With the right technology backing you up, you are more likely to be well placed to take nice photos. Hence what you want to do now is to pick the right camera. Always look at what you want. If you have problem choosing the best camera, get the outlets or professionals to help you. They are most likely experienced enough to fit a good camera to your needs.

2- Shoot plenty of pictures. Then you want to keep on shooting photos as often as possible. Always keep it with you. You never can say when the best subject will comes out. When you are taking your pictures, don’t forget to take multiple pictures and use various angles as well. When it comes to digital photography, all your photographs will be recorded to a memory card so you needn’t to stress about spending all that money for film like in the past.

3- Learn by making boo-boos. After that you will need to compare the photographs you have taken. This is the trial and error stage where you find out the best way to photograph your subject. Which of them looks better? Ask yourself why you this picture is better than the other? Think about what will happen when you change the white balance to photograph the same subject. Infrequently, challenging yourself is how you enhance your digital photography skills.

4- Remember what works. During the comparison of your pictures, you also must recall what you probably did to the photos. This is because when you start getting better at digital photography, you are supposed to solidly pump out great photos. You are supposed to understand how to position yourself to take great pictures of your subject. You are meant to know the way to use your flash under different circumstances rather than randomly testing with your photos.

5- Improve your abilities. The last tip to taking great pictures is you need to continually update yourself. Log on, read magazines and visit exhibitions to find out how other photographers are taking their stills. It is even better you can talk to multiple other photographers and ask them to give suggestions about your work.

We hope these tips may assist you with your photography in the future. If you discover that your camera is defective and you want to find yourself some good digital camera repair shop, then look no further than Google to point you in the right direction. Remember a specialty digital camera repair online shop will most likely be far less expensive than going through the digicam maker directly. One last tip, if you have a Canon SD790 IS camera, you will soon be looking for Canon Powershot SD790 screws if you haven’t done so already!

How come all digital cameras use this system for storing photos?

Root directory: DCIM (and sometimes MISC)
Inside DCIM: 100xxxxx (Five letter word like NIKON, CANON, PENTX, CASIO….)

What is the “Misc” folder for?

What does “DCIM” stand for?

Why exactly five digits after “100″?

Who set this standard for all digital cameras?

Thanks for answering this dumb question!

I am looking to buy a GOOD digital camera. I have been researching and have narrowed it down to two choices. The Canon Powershot S3 IS, and the Sony Cyber-shot H5. If you have one of these cameras please give me your opinion on it, the pros and cons. I have read mixed reviews on both cameras.
